about

According to BRUN, “RARITIES is a compilation of songs and recordings that have either not been released, or have been released on other compilations or as singles. This is a way to empty our cupboards of recordings that have been lying around, and another way to mark my ten year anniversary as an artist.” The collection includes covers of Björk and The Beatles, Elvis and Eurythmics, as well as new versions of fan favourites and, of course, previously unreleased songs, contributing further to an already impressive back catalogue.

ANE BRUN’S GUIDE TO RARITIES

'All My Tears', 'Orphan Girl' and 'Tragedy' are recordings I made in my Stockholm studio in preparation for an Emmylou Harris tribute show in Gothenburg a few years back. 'From Me To You' and '1 Thing' were also recorded by myself at that same studio space. The Beatles cover was a request from a UK radio DJ, and the Amerie cover was just me playing around one day trying to find my own way of singing one of my favorite dancefloor hits from the last decade.

When I toured in 2009 with The Diamonds (me and three female voices) promoting the Sketches album, we made it a tradition to play 'Halo' on the mini stereo backstage while putting on our make up, warming up as we tried to sing along with Beyoncé on this beautiful melody. One day I decided to try and make my own version, mainly as an experiment and for fun, but thanks to Linnea Olsson it became this beautiful mellow interpretation.

'Daring to Love' was written especially for Erik Poppe’s film A Thousand Times Goodnight, with Juliette Binoche in the leading role. The lyrics are inspired by the main character, and it became a song about the complexity of the human mind and heart: how we struggle with being strong and soft, loving and firm, dark and light, and getting all those pieces to fit together.

The Leonard Cohen song 'Ain't No Cure For Love' was recorded for the tribute album Cohen - The Scandinavian Report (2009).

'If I had a Ribbon Bow' was recorded by my friend and producer Tobias Froberg for an Odetta tribute album, Beautiful Star, in 2009.

'It’s Alright', by one of my all time favorite bands Eurythmics, was recorded for Amnesty International & Buffetlibre's project PEACE in 2007.

The piano version of 'Oh Love' was recorded during the sessions for 2011’s It All Starts With One. Martin Hederos and I did this alternative version live in front of a bunch of friends who were there to put down backing vocals for the album's bonus track, 'Queen and King'.

'The Opening' is a song whose lyrics and melody were written by myself with the music and production handled by the Fleshquartet. I got the script for the very last Wallander film, and wrote these lyrics inspired by the main character. It’s about trying to move forward when you find yourself at a standstill. It’s an encouraging song about daring to take a step in any direction when you feel stuck. Sometimes it’s just a small step or a short conversation - or sometimes just a single word - that can set off the necessary process of change.

Björk's 'Joga' was recorded at the 2010 Polar Prize Award Ceremony. I performed the song with the Swedish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in front of Björk herself, and I was as nervous as I’ve ever been, both before and after this TV recording. But it turned out rather great, and I’m proud today that I got to honour Björk when she received her Polar Music Prize.

'Falling Down' was recorded for a tribute album for Norwegian artist St Thomas who died when he was only 31 years old in 2007.

'Fly on the Windscreen' is a song by Depeche Mode, and I got to record a new vocal interpretation of it. The production is by Vince Clark himself. The song is part of the promotional campaign for Tonya Hurley’s book The Blessed. I was on tour in the US at the time this job was offered to me, so the vocals were recorded on the road, in a highway motel somewhere in the US. We used the closets as a song booth, and the bed linen as sound isolation.

'Humming One of Your Songs 2013' is a new version of the first track on my 2003 debut album. It’s the version that I’ve played live for the last two to three years, and I made this studio recording in early 2013.

'Crawfish' is an Elvis cover that I first performed live with Club Killers in Stockholm. I’ve played with them a few times: they make ska/dub/reggae versions of famous and not so famous songs, and invite singers to join them. We decided that we wanted to document our collaboration, and I’m glad we did!

'Petrified Forest Road' is a song I wrote on tour in the US in 2006. We drove through the beautiful West Coast landscape, and these lyrics were written down on a piece of paper while travelling from one gig to the next. We recorded this for the Changing of The Seasons album, but it never ended up being released in any way. My reference for this song when arranging it was a Nina Simone recording called 'I’m Gonna Leave You'.

The Bob Dylan song 'She Belongs To Me’ was recorded for the tribute album 'Subterranean Homesick Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan's 'Bringing It All Back Home'' (2010).
